states.
Competent Person (excavation standard)
The OSHA standard on excavation and trenching is:
“trenches five feet deep or more shall have… protection by sloping or
benching, shoring, shields or be designed by a registered professional
engineer. Trenches less than five feet deep still must be inspected by a
‘competent person’ to determine if they are safe.”

We have training professionals who can provide OSHA’s
eight-hour competent person training course for your employees. 4-Safety
Training, LLC also offers a four-hour refresher course for anyone. Tool
box talks also are available.
A majority of the fatal accidents occur in unsupported
or unsloped trenches from five to fifteen feet in depth. The fatality rate
has only moderately improved in the last 20 years even with the
implementation of OSHA’s rigid safety codes. Proper planning in the form
of engineered and designed support systems and the use of properly trained
construction supervisors (competent person), help eliminate excavation and
trench failures and accidents.
Confined Space
If your employees sometimes work in confined spaces,
call to schedule a four-hour awareness safety training session. The
session is geared to owners, superintendents and foremen and/or your
competent person in the field.
